Downtown shopping

Shopping in the Uptown neighborhood

Shopping the Uptown beat

There’s nothing like it: The energy. The style. The people.

WHERE TO HIT
Minneapolis’ central business district is the heart of downtown shopping. Several areas offer numerous shopping options in an urban environment:

  • Nicollet Mall – this pedestrian thoroughfare is loaded with history, major department stores and fine restaurants.
  • Warehouse District – this historic area is home to unique shops and numerous dining and entertainment outlets.
  • Minneapolis Riverfront District – this booming residential neighborhood is a great destination for experiencing Minneapolis history.
  • Northeast Minneapolis – this artsy neighborhood is packed with one-of-a-kind retailers and lots of places to relax.
  • Uptown – this hip area is not only a hot place to shop, but just to hang out.

ALWAYS ON
Downtown Minneapolis is home to nearly 40,000 residents and almost 200,000 workers. So, it’s not closing down at 5 pm. It’s just getting started! Downtown also offers:

  • Vibrant theater and arts—some can’t misses: Hennepin Avenue Theatre District, the Guthrie Theater and the Walker Art Center.
  • Amazing restaurants—try outposts by celebrity chefs: 20.21 by Wolfgang Puck at Walker Art Center and Chambers Kitchen by Jeans-Georges at the Chambers Hotel.
  • A hot music scene—some of our most lauded places include the Dakota (jazz) and First Avenue (everything from rock to hip-hop).
  • Headline-grabbing hotels—check into the art-tech Graves 601 or the quaint Nicollet Island Inn. Coming soon: three new Starwood hotels nestled in historic buildings.

GETTING AROUND
Downtown Minneapolis is considered one of the most walkable cities in the country. Very compact, getting around is easy:

  • Skyways—this 8-mile system of enclosed walkways connects the central downtown district – including stores, salons, restaurants, businesses and other attractions.
  • Proximate neighborhoods— all of downtown’s neighborhoods and areas are adjacent to each other.
  • Plentiful public transit—hopping on the “quarter bus” or one of the frequent routes gets you around in a snap.
  • LRT—the light rail train takes you from downtown to the Mall of America in just over 30 minutes.
